Most work in Akron AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Akron AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Akron AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Akron ALAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Akron AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Akron home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Akron AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Akron AL area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Akron AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Akron AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Akron healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Akron AL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Akron AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
