Elrod AL sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Elrod AL, it’s time to start the process of picking a school. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will furnish the necessary instruction to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each program so that you can assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? Many potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be considered when making a decision, but there are other important factors also. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Elrod AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Elrod AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Elrod AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Elrod AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Elrod ALAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Elrod AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Elrod home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Elrod AL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Elrod AL area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Elrod AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Elrod AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Elrod healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Elrod AL residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Elrod AL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
