Fairhope AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Fairhope AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Fairhope AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Fairhope AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fairhope ALAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Fairhope AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Fairhope home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Fairhope AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Fairhope AL area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Fairhope AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have associations with Fairhope AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Fairhope healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Fairhope AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Fairhope AL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Fairhope, Alabama

Fairhope is a city in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States, on a sloping plateau, along the cliffs and shoreline of Mobile Bay. The 2010 census lists the population of the city as 15,326.[4] Fairhope is a principal city of the Daphne-Fairhope-Foley micropolitan area, which includes all of Baldwin County. In 2016, Fairhope was named the best small town in the South by Southern Living magazine.[5]

Fairhope was founded in November 1894 on the site of the former Alabama City as a radical Georgist "Single-Tax" colony by the Fairhope Industrial Association, a group of 28 followers of economist Henry George who had incorporated earlier that year in Des Moines, Iowa.[6] Their corporate constitution explained their purpose in founding a new colony:

In forming their demonstration project, they pooled their funds to purchase land at "Stapleton's pasture" on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and then divided it into a number of long-term leaseholds.[citation needed] The corporation paid all governmental taxes from rents paid by the lessees, thus simulating a single-tax. The purpose of the single-tax colony was to eliminate disincentives for productive use of land and thereby retain the value of land for the community.[8]
