Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Flomaton AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Flomaton AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Flomaton AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Flomaton AL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Flomaton ALAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Flomaton AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Flomaton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Flomaton AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Flomaton AL area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Flomaton AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have associations with Flomaton AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Flomaton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Flomaton AL residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Flomaton AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Flomaton, Alabama

Flomaton is located at 31°0′32″N 87°15′21″W / 31.00889°N 87.25583°W / 31.00889; -87.25583 (31.008921, -87.255746).[3] It sits on the northern side of the border between Alabama and Florida. On the southern side of the border lies the town of Century in Florida's Escambia County.

U.S. Route 29 and U.S. Route 31 join at the town. The former, starting 45 miles (72 km) to the south in Pensacola, Florida, enters the town over the state border; the latter enters the town from the west, having originated near Mobile. The two highways continue together for about 13 miles (21 km) in a north-easterly direction, before separating at Brewton.

Flomaton was incorporated as a town in 1908, having been settled on a railway junction in 1869. The name "Flomaton" was chosen as a combination of "Florida", "Alabama" and "town", reflecting the town's location on the border between the two states. In the early twentieth century, the town's economy was driven by the timber industry and the town's location at an important railway junction.[5]
