So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school in order to evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? A number of students will begin by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Grand Bay AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Grand Bay AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Grand Bay AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Grand Bay AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Grand Bay ALAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Grand Bay AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Grand Bay home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Grand Bay AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Grand Bay AL area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Grand Bay AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Grand Bay AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Grand Bay medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Grand Bay AL residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Grand Bay AL area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
