Sonogram Tech Work Description

Hillsboro AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Hillsboro AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Hillsboro AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Hillsboro AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hillsboro ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hillsboro AL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hillsboro home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Hillsboro AL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hillsboro AL area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hillsboro AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Hillsboro AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Hillsboro medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Hillsboro AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hillsboro AL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

The town's municipal boundaries extend northward to U.S. Route 72.
