Sonographer Work Description

Jasper AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Jasper AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Jasper AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Jasper AL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Jasper ALAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Jasper AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Jasper home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Jasper AL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Jasper AL area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Jasper AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Jasper AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Jasper health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Jasper AL residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Jasper AL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
