Sonographer Work Description

Livingston AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Livingston AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Livingston AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Livingston AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Livingston ALAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Livingston AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Livingston home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Livingston AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Livingston AL area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Livingston AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Livingston AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Livingston medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Livingston AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Livingston AL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
