Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Mcintosh AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Mcintosh AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Mcintosh AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Mcintosh AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Mcintosh ALAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mcintosh AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Mcintosh home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Mcintosh AL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mcintosh AL area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mcintosh AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Mcintosh AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Mcintosh healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Mcintosh AL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mcintosh AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
