Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Midway AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Midway AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Midway AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Midway AL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Midway ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Midway AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Midway home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Midway AL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Midway AL area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Midway AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Midway AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Midway healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Midway AL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Midway AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
