  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Millport AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Millport AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Millport home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Millport AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Millport AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Millport AL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Millport AL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
