Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Opp AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Opp AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Opp AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Opp AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Opp ALAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Opp AL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Opp home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Opp AL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Opp AL area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Opp AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Opp AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Opp healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Opp AL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Opp AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
