Sonogram Tech Work Description

Orrville AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Orrville AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Orrville AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Orrville AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Orrville ALAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Orrville AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Orrville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Orrville AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Orrville AL area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Orrville AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Orrville AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Orrville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Orrville AL home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Orrville AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
