Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Paint Rock AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Paint Rock AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Paint Rock AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Paint Rock AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Paint Rock ALAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Paint Rock AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Paint Rock home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Paint Rock AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Paint Rock AL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Paint Rock AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Paint Rock AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Paint Rock health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Paint Rock AL residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Paint Rock AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
