Sonographer Job Description

Parrish AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Parrish AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Parrish AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Parrish AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Parrish ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Parrish AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Parrish home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Parrish AL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Parrish AL area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Parrish AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Parrish AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Parrish medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Parrish AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Parrish AL area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
