Sonographer Job Description

Red Bay AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Red Bay AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Red Bay AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Red Bay AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Red Bay ALAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Red Bay AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Red Bay home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Red Bay AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Red Bay AL area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Red Bay AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Red Bay AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Red Bay medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Red Bay AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Red Bay AL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Red Bay, Alabama

Red Bay is a city in Franklin County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1907. The population was 3,158 at the 2010 census,[3] down from 3,374 at the 2000 census. The town's name likely comes from its location amid a large stand of redbay trees at the time of its founding.[4]

What is now Red Bay was originally known as "Vinson's Crossroads," and was initially located further to the southwest along Gum Creek. A branch of the Illinois Central Railroad was constructed through the area in 1907, and Red Bay developed into an important lumber and shipping center. The city incorporated during this same period.[4]

The first school in Red Bay was located where the First United Methodist Church stands today. In 1903, this school had one faculty member who was responsible for teaching, as well as most of the custodial duties. After crops were harvested, students attended school through the remainder of the fall and winter months until the spring planting season.[5]
