Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Russellville AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Russellville AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Russellville AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Russellville AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Russellville ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Russellville AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Russellville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Russellville AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Russellville AL area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Russellville AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Russellville AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Russellville healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Russellville AL residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Russellville AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
