Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Slocomb AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Slocomb AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Slocomb AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Slocomb AL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Slocomb ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Slocomb AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Slocomb home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Slocomb AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Slocomb AL area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Slocomb AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Slocomb AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Slocomb health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Slocomb AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Slocomb AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
