Sonographer Job Summary

Verbena AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Verbena AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Verbena AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Verbena AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Verbena ALAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Verbena AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Verbena home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Verbena AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Verbena AL area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Verbena AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Verbena AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Verbena healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Verbena AL home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Verbena AL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
