Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Webb AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Webb AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Webb AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Webb AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Webb ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Webb AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Webb home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Webb AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Webb AL area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Webb AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Webb AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Webb medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Webb AL residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Webb AL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
