Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Adak AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Adak AK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Adak AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Adak AK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alaska or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Adak AKAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Adak AK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Adak home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Adak AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Adak AK area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Adak AK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Adak AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Adak medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Adak AK home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Adak AK area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

December is the wettest single month on average, while June and July are markedly the driest months, with thunderstorms virtually unknown here. Snowfall averages nearly 100 inches (2,500 mm) per winter season, which however tends to melt soon after falling. With 263 rainy days per year, Adak has the second highest number of any inhabited locality in the United States after Hilo, Hawaii.
