Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Circle AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Circle AK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Circle AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Circle AK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alaska or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Circle AK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Circle home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Circle AK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Circle AK area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Circle AK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Circle AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Circle health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Circle AK home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Circle AK area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
