Sonographer Occupation Summary

Kasilof AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Kasilof AK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Kasilof AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Kasilof AK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Alaska or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Kasilof AKAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kasilof AK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kasilof home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Kasilof AK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kasilof AK area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kasilof AK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Kasilof AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Kasilof healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Kasilof AK home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kasilof AK area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
