Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Kotlik AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Kotlik AK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Kotlik AK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Kotlik AK clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Alaska or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kotlik AKAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Kotlik AK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Kotlik home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Kotlik AK ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kotlik AK area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Kotlik AK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Kotlik AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Kotlik health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Kotlik AK residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kotlik AK area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
