Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Platinum AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Platinum AK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Platinum AK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Platinum AK hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Alaska or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Platinum AKAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Platinum AK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Platinum home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Platinum AK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Platinum AK area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Platinum AK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Platinum AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Platinum medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Platinum AK residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Platinum AK area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
