Point Lay AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Point Lay AK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Point Lay AK clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alaska or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Point Lay AK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Point Lay home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Point Lay AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Point Lay AK area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Point Lay AK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Point Lay AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Point Lay health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Point Lay AK residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Point Lay AK area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
