Sonographer Work Summary

Port Heiden AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Port Heiden AK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Port Heiden AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Port Heiden AK clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alaska or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Port Heiden AKAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Port Heiden AK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Port Heiden home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Port Heiden AK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Port Heiden AK area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Port Heiden AK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Port Heiden AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Port Heiden healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Port Heiden AK residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Port Heiden AK area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
