Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Unalakleet AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Unalakleet AK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Unalakleet AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Unalakleet AK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Alaska or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Unalakleet AKAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Unalakleet AK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Unalakleet home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Unalakleet AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Unalakleet AK area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Unalakleet AK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Unalakleet AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Unalakleet health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Unalakleet AK residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Unalakleet AK area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

At the 2010 census the population was 688, down from 747 in 2000. Unalakleet is known in the region and around Alaska for its salmon and king crab harvests; the residents rely heavily on caribou, ptarmigan, oogruk (bearded seal), and various salmon species. Unalakleet is also known for its aesthetic value, as it resides right next to the Bering Sea, immediately next to a large, clean river (Unalakleet River) and has trees, tundra, and hills behind it.

Unalakleet, an adaptation of the Iñupiaq word "Una-la-thliq",[4] which means "from the southern side". Some Unalakleet residents were mistakenly told it meant "where the east wind blows".[citation needed]

Unalakleet is located at the Norton Sound end of the Unalakleet-Kaltag Portage, an important winter travel route between Norton Sound and the Yukon River. Unalakleet has long been a major trade center between the Athabascans who lived in the interior of Alaska and the Inupiat who lived on the coast. The Russian-American Company built a trading post here at Unalakleet in the 1830s. Sami reindeer herders from Lapland were brought to Unalakleet to teach sound herding practices in 1898. In 1901, the United States Army Signal Corps built a 605-mile (974 km) telegraph line from St. Michael that passed through Unalakleet.
