Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Chinle AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Chinle AZ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Chinle AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Chinle AZ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arizona or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Chinle AZAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Chinle AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Chinle home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Chinle AZ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Chinle AZ area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Chinle AZ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Chinle AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Chinle health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Chinle AZ residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Chinle AZ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
