Sonographer Work Description

Cornville AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cornville AZ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Cornville AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Cornville AZ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arizona or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cornville AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Cornville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Cornville AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cornville AZ area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cornville AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Cornville AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Cornville medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Cornville AZ home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cornville AZ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
