Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

El Mirage AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in El Mirage AZ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

El Mirage AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through El Mirage AZ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in El Mirage AZAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local El Mirage AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your El Mirage home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask El Mirage AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the El Mirage AZ area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous El Mirage AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with El Mirage AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the El Mirage healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their El Mirage AZ residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the El Mirage AZ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
