Sonographer Occupation Summary

Fort Mohave AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Fort Mohave AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Fort Mohave AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Fort Mohave AZ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Fort Mohave AZAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fort Mohave AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Fort Mohave home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Fort Mohave AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Fort Mohave AZ area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Fort Mohave AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Fort Mohave AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Fort Mohave healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Fort Mohave AZ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Fort Mohave AZ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Fort Mohave, Arizona

Fort Mohave is a CDP in Mohave County, Arizona. It is named for a nearby fort that was used during the Mohave War. As of the census[3] of 2010, the population of Fort Mohave was 14,364. This was up from 8,919 in 2000. It is a micro-suburb of Bullhead City. Its recent growth has made it the most populous unincorporated community in Mohave County.[4]

The largest single employer in Fort Mohave is Valley View Medical Center. In 2013, Fort Mohave became the home of a 200+ acre photovoltaic solar generating plant. The plant was built east of Vanderslice Road between Joy Lane and Lipan Boulevard.[5]

The first known European to visit the area was Spanish explorer Melchor Díaz. He documented his travels in Northwestern Mohave County in 1540.[6] He accounts of meeting a large population of natives who referred to themselves as the Pipa Aha Macav, meaning "People by the River".[7] From "Aha Macav" came the Spanish name Mojave, which was later passed into English, where it is also spelled Mohave. When most people refer to Fort Mohave, they use the spelling "Mohave", while the tribe retains the traditional Spanish spelling "Mojave".
