Sonogram Tech Work Description

Hayden AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Hayden AZ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Hayden AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Hayden AZ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Hayden AZAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Hayden AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hayden home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Hayden AZ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hayden AZ area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hayden AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Hayden AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Hayden medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Hayden AZ residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hayden AZ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
