Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Lake Havasu City AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Lake Havasu City AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Lake Havasu City AZ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lake Havasu City AZAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lake Havasu City AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Lake Havasu City home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Lake Havasu City AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lake Havasu City AZ area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Lake Havasu City AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Lake Havasu City AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Lake Havasu City healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Lake Havasu City AZ residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lake Havasu City AZ area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
