Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Page AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Page AZ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Page AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Page AZ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Page AZAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Page AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Page home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Page AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Page AZ area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Page AZ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Page AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Page healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Page AZ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Page AZ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Page, Arizona

Unlike other cities in the area, Page was founded in 1957 as a housing community for workers and their families during the construction of nearby Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. Its 17-square-mile (44 km2) site was obtained in a land exchange with the Navajo Nation. The city is perched atop Manson Mesa at an elevation of 4,300 feet (1,300 m) above sea level and 600 feet (180 m) above Lake Powell.

After the dam was completed in the 1960s, and was officially incorporated (March 1, 1975), the city grew steadily to today's population of over 7,000. Because of the new roads and bridge built for use during construction, it has become the gateway to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell, attracting more than 3 million visitors per year. Page is also the home of two of the largest electrical generation units in the western United States. Glen Canyon Dam has a 1,288,000-kilowatt capacity when fully online. The other power plant to the southeast is the Navajo Generating Station, a coal-fired steam plant with an output capability of 2,250,000 kilowatts.
