Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Peridot AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Peridot AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Peridot AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Peridot AZ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Peridot AZAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Peridot AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Peridot home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Peridot AZ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Peridot AZ area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Peridot AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Peridot AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Peridot healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Peridot AZ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Peridot AZ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
