Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Sacaton AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Sacaton AZ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Sacaton AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Sacaton AZ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Arizona or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Sacaton AZAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Sacaton AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Sacaton home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Sacaton AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Sacaton AZ area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Sacaton AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Sacaton AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sacaton healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Sacaton AZ home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sacaton AZ area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
