Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Saint Michaels AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Saint Michaels AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Saint Michaels AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Saint Michaels AZ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Saint Michaels AZAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Saint Michaels AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Saint Michaels home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Saint Michaels AZ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Saint Michaels AZ area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Saint Michaels AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Saint Michaels AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Saint Michaels health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Saint Michaels AZ home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Saint Michaels AZ area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
