Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Snowflake AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Snowflake AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Snowflake AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Snowflake AZ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Snowflake AZAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Snowflake AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Snowflake home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Snowflake AZ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Snowflake AZ area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Snowflake AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Snowflake AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Snowflake healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Snowflake AZ home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Snowflake AZ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
