Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Tacna AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Tacna AZ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Tacna AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Tacna AZ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Tacna AZAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Tacna AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Tacna home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Tacna AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Tacna AZ area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Tacna AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Tacna AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Tacna healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Tacna AZ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Tacna AZ area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
