Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Aubrey AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Aubrey AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Aubrey AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Aubrey AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Aubrey ARAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Aubrey AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Aubrey home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Aubrey AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Aubrey AR area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Aubrey AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Aubrey AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Aubrey medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Aubrey AR home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Aubrey AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
