Austin AR sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Austin AR, the next step is to begin the process of choosing a school. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will provide the proper education to become a skilled professional. And given that some states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? Most potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Austin AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Austin AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Austin AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Austin AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Austin ARAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Austin AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Austin home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Austin AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Austin AR area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Austin AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Austin AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Austin medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Austin AR residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Austin AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
