Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

De Queen AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in De Queen AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

De Queen AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with De Queen AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in De Queen ARAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local De Queen AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your De Queen home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask De Queen AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the De Queen AR area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of De Queen AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with De Queen AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the De Queen health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their De Queen AR home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the De Queen AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
