Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Dermott AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Dermott AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Dermott AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Dermott AR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Dermott ARAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Dermott AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dermott home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Dermott AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dermott AR area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Dermott AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Dermott AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Dermott health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Dermott AR residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dermott AR area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
