Elm Springs AR sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Elm Springs AR, the next step is to begin the procedure of selecting a school. First, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the proper education to become a qualified professional. And because some states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? Most potential students will begin by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this article. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Elm Springs AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Elm Springs AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Elm Springs AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Elm Springs AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Elm Springs ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Elm Springs AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Elm Springs home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Elm Springs AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Elm Springs AR area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Elm Springs AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Elm Springs AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Elm Springs health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Elm Springs AR residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elm Springs AR area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
