Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Eudora AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Eudora AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Eudora AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Eudora AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Eudora ARAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Eudora AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Eudora home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Eudora AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Eudora AR area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Eudora AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Eudora AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Eudora medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Eudora AR residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Eudora AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
