Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Gassville AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Gassville AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Gassville AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Gassville AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Gassville ARAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Gassville AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Gassville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Gassville AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Gassville AR area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Gassville AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Gassville AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Gassville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Gassville AR home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Gassville AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
