Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Gilmore AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Gilmore AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Gilmore AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Gilmore AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Gilmore ARAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gilmore AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Gilmore home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Gilmore AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Gilmore AR area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Gilmore AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Gilmore AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Gilmore healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Gilmore AR home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Gilmore AR area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
