Greenbrier AR sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Greenbrier AR, it’s time to start the process of picking a college. First, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper education to become a skilled professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each college in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? Many students will begin by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Greenbrier AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Greenbrier AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Greenbrier AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Greenbrier AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Greenbrier ARAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Greenbrier AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Greenbrier home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Greenbrier AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Greenbrier AR area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Greenbrier AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Greenbrier AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Greenbrier medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Greenbrier AR residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Greenbrier AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
