Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Gurdon AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Gurdon AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Gurdon AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Gurdon AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Gurdon ARAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Gurdon AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Gurdon home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Gurdon AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Gurdon AR area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gurdon AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Gurdon AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Gurdon medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Gurdon AR residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gurdon AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
